VOLUNTEERS OF AMERICA COLORADO: SHINING A LIGHT ON FOOD INSECURITY AND HOMELESSNESS AND BUILDING A MORE COMPASSIONATE COLORADO

BACKGROUND

Food insecurity is a harsh reality for many Coloradoans. Here are some sobering statistics:

  • Nearly one in seven Coloradans struggle with hunger.
  • Nearly one in eight live in poverty, including more than one in seven kids.
  • Nearly one in five Colorado kids may not always know when or where they will get their next meal.
  • One in seven Colorado seniors has to choose between buying food and paying bills.

Data on homelessness is equally shocking. Estimates show that approximately 14,000 Coloradoans experience homelessness on a daily basis. And, homelessness in the state increased by 39% from 2022-2023.

Volunteers of America (VOA) Colorado is a nonprofit, faith-based organization dedicated to helping those in need transform their lives. Through more than 50 distinct human service programs, VOA Colorado serves over 100,000 people in need each year. VOA Colorado’s services include housing and emergency shelters, hunger and nutrition services, along with many other community support programs. Their work touches the mind, body, and heart of those they serve by integrating compassion into highly effective programs and services that build and strengthen communities.

CHALLENGE

Fighting food insecurity and homelessness cannot only fall on the shoulders of one organization. Nonprofits like VOA Colorado need the active participation – and compassion – of donors, partners, and volunteers, and that participation is only inspired by awareness. In a climate where social issues such as these are in the news daily, Avocet’s challenge has been to SHINE A LIGHT on VOA Colorado’s mission and unique programs.

STRATEGY

VOA Colorado partnered with Avocet to create an impactful strategy – incorporating PR, media relations, social/digital, and creative – addressing the dual crises of food insecurity and homelessness. The SHINE A LIGHT strategy harnesses the power of integrated communications to raise awareness, drive engagement, and inspire action among Coloradoans.

Key Objectives:

  • Increase awareness of VOA Colorado’s services and mission.
  • Mobilize community support through donations, partnerships, and volunteerism.
  • SHINE A LIGHT on the harsh realities of food insecurity and homelessness in Colorado.
  • SHINE A LIGHT on the ways people can contribute, donate, and volunteer.

Target Audience:

  • General public
  • Potential donors and corporate partners
  • Local and state government agencies
  • Media outlets

EXECUTION

Public Relations and Media Relations:

A statewide PR and media relations initiative was deployed that included:

  • A regular schedule of news releases to announce programs, holiday food drives, etc.
  • A proactive feature story campaign that included positioning the VOA Colorado executive team and board members as thought leaders/spokespeople for the organization and the issue.
  • A thought leadership program that included the drafting and placement of contributed articles and podcast appearances by VOA Colorado’s president and CEO.
  • A proactive media outreach initiative that highlighted how the VOA’s program impacts individuals–this inclulded drafting and placing heartwarming and inspiring contributed articles by participants (such as a woman veteran, etc.)
  • Compelling storytelling anchored all of the media relations outreach.

Social/Digital Media:

  • Strategic social pillars were developed that informed all of the monthly content: Community Impact, Volunteerism, A Reason to Believe, and Funding.
  • Each week, social posts on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn focused on these same four key areas and included calls-to-action.
  • A cohesive graphic identity was created.
  • Tailored content for different audiences and demographics was provided.
  • Leveraged Sponsor Partnerships: A collaboration with sponsors to co-create content and share posts was put in place to increase visibility and introduce VOA Colorado to new audiences. Audience interaction was fostered along with engagement by quickly responding to comments and messages. This has built a sense of community and encourages further engagement.
  • Encouraged Employee Engagement on LinkedIn: An internal program was established to encourage employees to engage with and share organization-related content on LinkedIn. This taps into their networks and widens the content’s reach.
  • Spotlighted Donor, Board Member, Partner, and Volunteer Contributions: Corporate donors are showcased on LinkedIn to recognize their contributions and expand the organization’s exposure within the business community.
  • Provided Seamless Seasonal Integration: Relevant holidays and seasonal elements have been integrated into content and programs to keep the VOA Colorado’s messages timely and relatable.
  • Elevated Content Quality: The quality of articles and news shares has been emphasized to deliver well-researched, informative, and thought-provoking content that enhances credibility and encourages sharing.

Creative:

RESULTS

The campaign significantly amplified VOA Colorado’s visibility and impact:

  • Awareness: Achieved over 3,678,512 impressions across media channels, resulting in an increase in website traffic during the campaign period.
  • Clicks: Increased clicks boosting 24,685.
  • Donations & Partnerships: Secured new donations, increased recurring donations, and formed new partnerships with local businesses and organizations.
  • Volunteerism: Boosted volunteer sign-ups which translated into increased volunteer hours dedicated to VOA Colorado’s programs.

The SHINE A LIGHT campaign successfully raised critical awareness and fostered a sense of community solidarity, demonstrating the power of integrated marketing in driving social change. Through our collective efforts, we brought the mission of VOA Colorado to the forefront, helping to build a stronger, more compassionate Colorado.
