Borrowed Credibility: Why the Right Strategic Alliances Can Accelerate Growth

“How can we build a story together, a better together joint value proposition that really is compelling not just to the end customer, but also ultimately to the partners?” – Fabian Ekström-French

One of the things I love most about hosting StrategyCast is discovering leaders who can take a familiar business idea and make me see it completely differently.

That is exactly why I was so excited to sit down with Fabian Ekström-French, Director of Partner Development at Guru. Fabian has spent more than a decade building, repairing, and reimagining partnership ecosystems across the SaaS industry. And from the beginning of our conversation, I knew we were going somewhere far beyond traditional co-marketing.

Because strategic alliances are not simply another distribution channel.

Done well, they can become engines for credibility, intelligence, differentiation, and growth.

The Biggest Partner Is Not Always the Best Partner

There is a temptation in business to chase the biggest logo in the room.

Fabian learned firsthand why that can be a costly mistake.

He described working with a large global distributor that appeared perfect on paper. It had enormous reach, thousands of customers, and a massive sales organization. But that scale became the problem. With thousands of products competing for sellers’ attention, his company’s offering simply was not important enough to command focus.

Meanwhile, a much smaller, highly targeted distributor understood the niche, recognized the customer pain, and proved to be a significantly better fit.

The lesson is powerful: reach without relevance is just noise.

Before entering an alliance, leaders should be able to answer three questions: Do we serve a shared ideal customer? Is there a meaningful joint value proposition? And does working together make both organizations more competitive?

Christina Liebman, a Global Marketing and Communications expert, made a similar point during her appearance on StrategyCast Episode 517:

“I think you’ve gotta make sure that you find a partner that, you know, understands your value proposition, what you’re trying to do, and how you’re trying to grow, and then understands kind of what your ideal customer profile looks like and can help you partner on finding the prospects that you’re trying to target.”

Partnerships Can Become Intelligence Engines

One of Fabian’s most interesting observations was that partnerships can reveal information companies may struggle to uncover on their own.

Partners know their customers. They understand priorities, budgets, preferences, buying behavior, and emerging pain points.

Fabian shared an example of co-hosting an executive roundtable with a much larger strategic partner. That partner’s brand brought Fortune 500 and Fortune 100 leaders into the room, creating access to conversations and insights his company would have struggled to generate independently.

As Fabian put it:

“This is the intelligence you can’t buy.”

Think about the implications.

Traditional research can require surveys, recruiting, focus groups, and weeks of analysis. A trusted alliance can create opportunities for candid customer conversations much faster.

Trust Turns Access Into Opportunity

Of course, access alone is not the real advantage.

Trust is.

Fabian and I kept returning to a phrase during our conversation: borrowed credibility.

When an emerging company appears alongside an established, respected brand, some of that confidence transfers. A meeting that might have been difficult to secure suddenly becomes possible. A prospect may listen differently. Uncertainty begins to shrink.

Research reinforces this. A 2025 Business Systems Research study found that trust contributes to strategic alliance success by increasing partners’ willingness to share complementary resources, capabilities, and knowledge. In other words, trust does not merely make a partnership feel stronger. It helps unlock the resources that make “better together” real.

And this is becoming even more relevant as AI reshapes partner ecosystems. IDC’s 2026 research points toward partner value increasingly shifting toward influence, orchestration, specialized expertise, and trusted advisory relationships as automation absorbs more traditional work.

Focus Is a Growth Strategy

Partnership opportunities are everywhere once you begin looking for them.

That is precisely why discipline matters.

Fabian recommends applying an 80/20 mindset, concentrating resources on the partnerships most likely to create meaningful impact before expanding into additional categories.

This is not about collecting logos for a partner page. It is about building a repeatable growth motion.

AI can certainly help identify prospects, analyze overlap, automate workflows, and improve efficiency. But Fabian offered an important warning: use technology to improve the partnership process, not replace the relationships behind it.

That distinction matters.

The future of strategic alliances will not belong to companies with the longest partner lists. It will belong to organizations that know exactly why they are partnering, who they should partner with, and what unique value they can create together.

Fabian captured the ultimate business impact perfectly:

“Deal cycles shrink and conversion rates increase.”

That is where partnership strategy becomes growth strategy.

Questions to Ask Yourself

  • Are your partnerships built around strategic fit or simply brand recognition?
  • Can you clearly articulate why your organization and each partner are better together?
  • What customer intelligence could your partners help you uncover?
  • Are you concentrating resources on your highest-impact alliances?
  • Where could borrowed credibility shorten the distance between your organization and its next major opportunity?

If you would like to explore these ideas further, I encourage you to listen to my conversation with Fabian Ekström-French where we discuss strategic alliances, borrowed credibility, customer intelligence, partner selection, AI, and why the right relationship can accelerate growth in ways marketing spend alone cannot.
